The Flight - Part One

For a little while now I've been posting a fairly random series of posts, with nothing really to connect them other than they're all about toy soldiers (surprise surprise). At the same time I've been marveling at the patience, dedication, and endurance of people like David Soper, Klaus, and Colonel O'Truth. These hobbyists (and many more like them) can really take their time with a model, be it a single Skink priest or an enormous scratchbuild with tens of thousands of hand-cut rivets.

Well, I've decided to give this approach a try and will chronicle my building of "The Flight" (working title) in a similar manner. I'm also planning on collaborating with a few other artists on various projects over the next 12 months, and this is the first of those collaborations.

I've been thinking my way through this particular diorama idea since Games Day 2012. After attending the classes of Victoria Lamb and Roman Lappat at Adepticon earlier in the year, I knew I had to spend a bit more time planning this project out if I was going to push my own limits and get the best out of it that I could. The two rough sketches above are ones I did on the flight home from Adepticon. They show the basic structure of the diorama, some ideas for lighting/colors, and the genesis of the story - the flight of an Inquisitor and his henchmen towards a waiting gun-cutter at the end of a Star Wars-style walkway.

Well, after turning over a bunch of things in my mind, I asked my good mate - author Anthony Reynolds - if he could help me out by making something more concrete out of my general idea. He was a real champ and sent me this:

As we run, overpowered las-fire and solid-slug projectiles hurtle by us, buzzing like angry insects. I would have been hit a dozen times already if not for Saskia. She has her hand out behind her as she runs, slender ring-encased fingers splayed. She’s nudging the enemies’ shots away, deflecting the incoming fire with her mind, just enough to miss us.

Spotlights from ornithopters overhead chase us, leading our pursuers on. More of them are closing in fast; I hear their jumbled thoughts crashing against me.

We have what we came for. The heavy stasis-tube is mag-locked to my thigh. Contained within: the gene-seed of an Adeptus Astartes. The Ordo suspects their genestock is compromised. We will see. Thankfully, it is not the Space Marines themselves that are hunting us. Not yet.

My name: Miklos Aladar Bartok. My rank: Inquisitor, Ordo Hereticus.

I kill one of our pursuers. My wrist-mounted inferno pistol burns his head to ash. Two more fall to the heavy, chunking fire of Urgo-Wroth. The massive, slab-muscled warrior – vat-grown from augmented gene-stock and heavily mecha-augmented – is a living tank. The gantry-bridge shudders with his every step as he runs. Saskia doesn’t bother exerting her psychic powers to protect Urgo-Wrath – he can handle everything this enemy throws at him. His body is riddled with las-burns and bullets unable to penetrate the thick shielding implanted within his flesh.

His malformed twin, held aloft on humming suspensor arrays, is similarly left unprotected by Saskia. Incoming fire hammers at the crackling refractor field bubble that protects him. He retaliates with stabbing fire of his own, darting sinuously through the air, his face twisted in savage pleasure as he kills. I do not approve of the glee he takes in snuffing out life… but his usefulness outweighs his moral failings.

More of our pursuers – I cannot yet bring myself to name them enemies – fall to Areta’s shadow-blades. Part of the darkness shrouding the immense facility, she disappears and reappears at will, appearing behind, above, below and next to our pursuers, despatching them with ruthless thrusts and cuts before jumping again. To her foes, she is a living shadow, a murderous shade that is all but impossible to target. To me, she is much more.
My cadre is rounded out with three others: Luthor Hayne, my pilot, a murderer, ex-ganger and substance abuser, and also the best gun-cutter pilot I’ve ever met; Sister Aaliyah, a mournful penitent of the Adeptus Sororitas, soul-bonded to me and desperate to atone for some past indiscretion; and the mercenary Hand, giving the rest of us covering fire. He’s possibly the most dangerous of us all, with his two kill-drones. One day there will be a reckoning between us, of that I’m certain.

Hayne brings my cutter down through the acid rain storm. Lightning reflects off its glossy, void-black hull. It’s a gorgeous craft, as sleek and swift as a knife. The turret-cannon underslung beneath its insect-blade nose opens up, churning through the ranks of our pursuers. Still, more of them are closing in, and they are bringing in heavier elements now. Military-grade.

We’ve done more than stir up the hornet’s nest; we’ve dropped a grenade right in the middle of the hive, and the hornets are not best pleased.

I smile. It’s going to be a close-run thing. I send out a mind impulse to my cadre.

+ Break off. It’s time to leave. +

I've started work on Urgo-Wroth. After I finish the detailing on him, I'll start to add his heavy bolter. I think I'll have him standing on the platform near the waiting gun-cutter, his chunking fire lighting up the scene a little.

Throughout this process I'm really happy to take suggestions from you all. Understand that I might not follow them, but they'll all impact the progress in some way, shape, or form.

Cheers

One week on and I have a few WIP images to show you for my diorama (The Flight). Above is Urgo Wroth, now with arms and lots of other detailing.

And a few different models here. On the left is my initial model for Areta. She is based on a model I started originally as a Mechanicum assassin. Most of Areta is from the Dark Eldar Wyches kit. In the center is my first stab at Saskia, who owes much of here look to the Dark Elf Corsair kit, along with bitz from DE Wyches, Daemonettes, and the VC Coven Throne. On the right is the start of Sister Aaliyah, made from Dark Elf Corsair legs and a Daemonette torso. I'm thinking now, however, that I might need to use some of the new Dark Elf Witch Elves pieces to start her over again.

In addition to the work on the diorama, I started putting together my recent Forgeworld acquisitions.

And put a little paint on my Mechanicum Skittari Centurion.

I hope you like them.

Mechanicum Bondsmen

Just a quick post today to show off a unit I put together and painted last week. After reading Lords of Mars (by Graham McNeill) I decided to turn a unit of Victoria Miniatures' Penal Legion models (that I've had sitting on my desk since Adepticon) into a unit of "below the waterline" bondsmen, the lowest of the low who are press-ganged into servitude in the mighty machine of the Imperium.

This unit is the first of Victoria's models that has been cast in resin, and she is currently going through the process of switching her entire range into resin. The quality of her sculpts is wonderful with lots of crispness and characterful pieces. The quality of the casts was equally great, with only a few areas of flash to be trimmed up during assembly.

As well as the parts to make the squad you see above, there are quite a few other options in the set, including two different torsos for the squad overseer, as well as three different head options. Very cool.

I'm looking forward to the rest of Victoria's range making it into resin. It might be time again to paint a new Gaunt's Ghosts army ; )

I was able to finish off the paintjob on my Skittarii Centurion last week, and here it is. I tried to match a lot of the colors/finishes from my Thallax constructs and Knight. I'm pretty happy with the result.

And here's a comparison shot of him standing next to Volsinii Imperator.

Size Comparison - because you asked.

A couple of folks were curious about the relative sizes of the Centurions, Castellax, and Contemptor Dread, so I took a quick shot of these guys today. Obviously the Centurion is the smallest, but he still has a lot of bulk compared to the Castellax. And the Contemptor Dread has quite a bit of height on the Castellax.

This Contemptor is for my upcoming re-work of my Heresy-era Death Guard. I've been assembling quite a few new models in between painting up more stuff for my Mechanicum.

Anyway, here's a group shot I like to call "The Bronze"

Mechanicum Castellax (and some others)

While I've been tinkering around with another couple of projects, I've also continued painting up more models for my Mechanicum army.

Chief amongst these new additions are the first three Castellax. Once I get a good look at the Castellax rules I might add some more (or these may be the only three, we'll have to see).

Here's a multi-view image of the most dynamically modeled Castellax of the bunch. All three are built using stock parts and within the allowable limits of the joints etc. I'm sure, given a little more time, I could have assembled them in a more dynamic fashion, but I actually like their "blockiness".

When I painted the Thallax earlier this year, I painted the "core" on their back a deep blue. As the cover for apparently a similar part on the Castellax has rivets, I decided to move the deep blue part to the top globe, where numerous cables feed into. It almost gives it a "brain in a jar" feel.

The other models I've been working on are this Magos (updated from my old army and mounted on a 60mm base) and this...

...new Magos, a head-swap conversion from the Chaos Space Marine Warsmith. I love the idea and the look of the Warsmith model, but this Finecast version had many bubbles, just enough to sap my enthusiasm for the job. Anyway, I think he'll fit in well enough, as long as I stand him at the back ; )

Mechanicum Magos

Not wanting my ever increasing painting queue to overtake my recent Forgeworld purchases, I started painting up the Magos Dominus with Rad-Cleanser immediately after finishing off the Castellax. I'm not sure of his rules, I am yet to order the (edit: Massacre) book from FW, but hopefully he'll be a bit of fun on the tabletop.

It was a real treat to paint this guy up, even moreinsight gleaned into the Mechanicum aesthetic. Things like the idea that a Magos Dominus needs almost a dozen servo skulls to help him execute his duties.

Black Brunswickers - Light Battalion

Just a quick one for today. Some of you may remember this post HERE, where I talked about buying some models that someone else had already painted. I was surprised I did it at the time, but as I hoped, with a little prising models off bases and sticking them done to other bases, touching up a few bitz here and there, adding a mounted officer, and then rebasing everything I'd have a new battalion for my Napoleonic collection.

My thanks again to Pat Smith (of Wargaming with Silver Whistle blog fame) for these great models at a great price. I need to get a hold of a few Line battalion packs from the Perrys now to expand my Black Bruswicker Brigade (try saying that three times fast). Should be sometime in the new year, but I'm sure it'll happen.

The Flight - Part Three

This week I hope to bring you a few more photos of my work in progress for "The Flight". You can check out the first two parts of this ongoing project here and here.

Here's my completed build for Urgo-Wrath, the brute of the warband. His initial form is that of the Warhammer plastic Nurgle Lord model. I trimmed back a lot of the "bloat" and puttied in a lot of the decayed sections. I rebuilt the front of his torso to give him a more muscular look, but I went for an unrefined, slab-muscled look.

His rotor cannon is from the Space Wolves Wolf Guard Terminators kit, and the backpack (loaded with incredible amounts of ammunition) is from the Space Marines Devastator kit (it's a heavy bolter back pack). Initially I was hoping to be able to use the original ammo feed from the HB, but things just didn't line up. So, building it was the only way. Hopefully the new ammo feed will paint up crisply.

Anyway, feel free to let me know what you think of this guy. There isn't too much wiggle room, but there might be some detailing I could include.

Another update on my Inquisition-themed diorama. Click these links to see Parts One, Two, and Three.

The first model to check out is Areta, Inquisitor Bartok's Assassinatrix. Areta actually started out as a potential part of my Mechanicum army (after being inspired by the assassin in the story of the same name), but once I'd read Anthony's story for my diorama, I knew I could repurpose her.

Built from Dark Eldar Wyche parts, I think she has a great, coiled menace about her. Following on from the idea of having all the henchmen with shrouded or augmented sight, I think I'll be adding some bionic eyes to Areta.

And then there's Saskia, Bartok's telekine. I'm thinking that  should either put up a veil over her face, or simply paint her eyes without pupils. Still a lot more work to go, and lots of fiddly details on the bodice and skirts of her dress.

More Mechanicum Menials

What a busy week. I haven't had as much time to blog as I would have liked, but most nights I've been crashing on the couch as soon as the girls are in bed. So, expect a few more posts over the next week (if I can stay awake).

First up are three more Mechanicum menials. Two are converted from Forgeworld
Vraksian priests, the third is a Night Goblin conversion I did back with the others, but somehow misplaced on my incredibly clean painting table ; )

There were some fairly extensive conversions done to the guy on the left, extra cables added, resin cables replaced, a cool "Tentacle Maker" arm (including a connector to interface with communications arrays), and other elemtns from an Imperial Guard voxcaster. The guy on the right is almost completely untouched, just a few areas where some bubbles needed to be filled. The little guy in the middle was built much like these were.

I'll be putting them on Dragon Forge Tech Deck bases as soon as my package arrives tomorrow : )

Also on my painting table is this brute - Frank Hyde. I've had him for a little while now, but was never sure what to do with him. When I saw the cool new plinths from Secret Weapon Miniatures I new I finally had a setting for him. I'm going to be trying out a few new techniques (for me at least) on Frank, so don't expect to see him finished anytime soon. If you are interested in seeing Frank with an excellent paintjob, head to the Infamy Miniatures website and check out all the goodness there.

Horus Heresy - The Death Guard begin

Some time in 2006 I started working on a Pre-Heresy Death Guard army (or I guess you could call it a Great Crusade Death Guard army). I painted up a few squads (two of which picked up Staff Golden demons for me), and built roughly 1,000 points to play in the AdeptiCon 2007 team tournament.

Since that time they've really just sat back and watched a lot of other folks work their magic on the aesthetics of the Horus Heresy period, and they've certainly been waiting for me to bolster their ranks with some Forge World goodies. Well, now is that time. A few friends have started talking about doing some 30K gaming at Adepticon 2014, so I guess it's time to pull my finger out and get painting.

First on deck is this seriously cool Contemptor Dreadnought with twin Kheres-pattern assault cannons. Two Heavy 6, S6, Rending guns on an AV13 body? Sign me up.

Anyway, this guy was my first model base painted with my Badger Khrome airbrush. It was an interesting experience trying to get the highlights in the right place, and there's certainly a lot of room for improvement, but I'm very happy with how it gave me some nice indications of where to enhance shades and highlights with a brush, and some of the lovely smooth transitions.

Since these photos were taken, I've repainted the left knee-pad to match the color of the shoulders (helping to move the eye around the model (thanks Chris and the others for your insistence on this).
Of course, the firestorm-ravaged base of Istvaan III still needs to be completed, followed by plenty of ash and soot being added to the lower legs.

Until next time!

Dave

The Flight - Part Five

I'm back with another update of work on my Inquisitor warband diorama "The Flight". Click on the link here to take you back to the last four updates.

Well, this update shows the work so far on Sister Aaliyah, the Repentia soul-bonded to my inquisitor. Above you can see the initial take on her. Using Dark Elf Corsair legs and Daemonette torso and head, I'd got quite a ways down the track to having her done...

Then GW released the new Dark Elf models. I went halves in the Cauldron of blood model with a friend who really wanted the Medusa. Below you can see my second version of Aaliyah underway. Still a bit more work to be done, but I'm enjoying the slenderness of her frame, particularly when compared to the bulk of Urgo-Wrath.

Anyway, I'll leave these images here. Feel free to tear them apart ; )

Horus Heresy - More Breachers

Finally got a bit of time to shoot some of my latest paint jobs in front of the lights. I've almost completed my little Killzone project, just four more Tactical Marines to go.

I'm still undecided on the final basing, and therefore weathering, treatment for my models. It'll be either dark grey and rusted metal, or much darker and sootier. Let me know what you guys think.

And now, on to the Breachers. I hope you like them.

Horus Heresy - Tactical Marines

First, I'd like to say I hope everyone who celebrated it had a Happy Thanksgiving yesterday. I know mine was very good, lots of cooking, eating, drinking, and spending time with family (both near and abroad).

But now, on to the next set of minis. Here are the first four from a group of eight Tactical Marines I'm painting up for this Killzone project. Back in 2005/6 when I was working on my original batch of Death Guard, I painted up a Tactical Squad that won me a Staff Golden Demon trophy. I was torn this time, because I knew I wanted to include some new models and I also loved my old squad. What should I do paint-wise? (particularly as GW had stopped production of all the old paints I had used.)

In the end I decided to repaint my old models, so that everything would match my new scheme (painted using P3 Bastion Grey as the base). I hope you like them.

The first announcement today is to draw your attention to the new Painting Service being run by an old friend (from way back in the day) Jonathan Palermo. Jonathan and I both worked for GW in Australia, but now he's in Canada and I'm in the US. I guess we love to travel ; )

Anyway, head to his blog - Seismic Miniature Painting Studio - and check out some of his work. If you're in the market for a model, unit, or army, make sure you think of Jonathan!

Battleroad Games & Hobbies

My friend Alex Akers, owner of Battleroad Games and Hobbies, has recently taken up a new job and has sadly had to come to the decision to close down the Battleroad business. During his closing period he's running a closeout sale that you may wish to take part in. From Alex's Facebook post:

"It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing the shutdown of Battleroadhobbies.com. This was not a decision I came to easily and has to do with family issues as well as not having the time to work on the Katana Miniatures games project. Based on these factors as well as a few others I have decided that the best course of action is to shut down Battleroad Games and Hobbies LLC and focus my energy on Katana: War of the Oni, as well as my family. Sadly their is not another company willing to take up the mantel of ownership so it's just best to shut it all down.

Based on all of this I have decided it's best to conduct a 40% off sale of all items in stock on the webstore. When checking out use the code closeoutsale and that will give you the 40% off. It has been a great few years operating BRGH and meeting many of you personally. I look forward to bringing our community my teams Katana miniatures game in 2014 and would like to thank all of those who have supported and shopped with us over these past few years. We will be officially shutting down Dec 31st 2013 at 1159pm so the sale will run until then.
- Alex"
