Red Robes Galore!

Just a quick update for today. My little servitors are all painted now, but as I type this I see that I missed photographing one of them (the one with the lens for a head). I guess I'll have to get a shot of him later on, when I'm back near my photo gear. As you've no doubt noticed on my plasma servitors, I've been messing around with some OSL. I've done the same here with the skull-holding servitor on the right, but using yellows rather than blues. I'm taking a class at Adepticon in April, so I wanted to have a few models that could be critiqued ready to go.

But otherwise, I hope you enjoy these little margin-fillers ; )

Flying servitors are complete

And the final quick little post while I'm actually on the other side of the globe from my paints and minis (yes, I've been in Australia for the last week and a half) is of the flying servitors. These little guys were quite popular when I originally posted them, hopefully the paint has increased their appeal even further.

And as a reminder, here are the original WIP shots.

I'll be back in the US soon and will hopefully have some more new minis to show you all a few days later.

A mixed bag...

After getting back from our family vacation in Australia, it certainly has been a busy week getting back in the swing of things. I have a bunch of projects on my table (at least four I think), so we'll get to those as they all near completion. Above is one of my Mechanicum pieces about a third of the way through. I'm looking forward to getting more paint on him soon : )

One advantage of going away for two weeks is that you can end up with a few packages waiting for you when you get back. I was excited to see the Badger Renegade Krome airbrush I ordered from Secret Weapon Miniatures was delivered. Time to put some yellow on my Lamenters Storm Raven, I think!

I was also surprised to find this cool package. Seems a few friends at Outlaw Miniatures sent me a little teaser package for their new game, Wild West Exodus. Above is issue #1 of the "comic of the game" (or is the game "the game of the comic"?), and I must say the story and art are very cool. Below is a "pre-production" test shot of one of the minion models for the game, and Animated Brute from The Enlightened faction. Like a lot of the models being released now by folks like Wyrd and Dream-Forge, this cool zombie is all plastic and wonderfully detailed. He should be a hoot to paint up, and is currently standing on a wooden plank base from FullBorer Miniatures.

I urge you all to head on over to the Outlaw Miniatures' Kickstarter campaign and see if it's something you're interested in. I'm really keen on the blend of Wild West, Steampunk, Sci-fi, and mystical zealotry.

Finally, here's a teaser of something I've been working on here and there. I think you'll see some more of him over the coming months : )

More Mechanicum rolling off the production line.

I got the chance to stop by my FLGS (Dropzone Games!) on Friday afternoon and pick up a couple of models they ordered in for me. These models were the plastic Necromancer and the plastic Chaos Sorcerer, I felt the robes would work well for more Mechanicum fun.

After a frenzy of cutting, gluing, and sculpting over the weekend, you can now see the results for yourselves. The two models really have quite a different "feel", something I'm going for in this collection of Mechanicum models.

Here's the Adept based off the Necromancer. With the simple addition of a Necron Wraith tail, a servo skull head and a couple of changes to his staff top and there's a strong sense of weirdness to this guy. Anyone want to suggest a discipline for Mechanicum him?

This guy is a little more conventional, and has a couple of links to the Adept on the back of the Admekrepairrume - primarily that he carries the same staff, and shares a very similar style of head, one that I always think of as being based on a Karl Kopinski drawing.

Both have a growing collection of cables springing from their backs, much like the other Adepts I've been building recently.

Anyway, I hope you like them.

And now for something completely different...

Recently I was chatting with a good friend of mine, and he was regaling me with stories about this interesting idea he had for a sci-fi skirmish game, it was something quite different to the many games already out there,  and the background he has written for the "universe" it is set in sounded very cool (I'm a very story-driven hobbyist, if you hadn't already guessed).

Inspired by the idea, I thought I'd mess around with something for it, so here's a quick diversion - a vignette of an Outlander-refurbished T-72, with crewman checking out a downed camera drone.

The 15mm tank model is from Quick Reaction Force in the UK, the crewmen are from Flames Of War (Soviet tankers), as ar some of the accesories on the tank, and the drone is from a couple of GW plastic off-cuts. The rocket rack is cut from plasticard and there's a little bit of greenstuff too.

Anyway, I'm not sure what'll become of his idea, but as I learn more (and can divulge details) I'll let you know.

Back to the Mechanicum (and Union troops, and Lamenters) for me : )

Wild West Exodus - Animated Brute

After finishing my latest Union regiment (the 7th Wisconsin) over the weekend, I had a night to fitter away on a single miniature. I decided to get some paint on the Animated Brute from Wild West Exodus while the Kickstarter is still running. I've been enjoying the blue pants I've been painting on my Union models, so I decided to go for something similar on this zombie, but I added a little more texture, hopefully giving him a bit of a denim feel. Just perfect for the period, I think.

At the moment he may be a little too clean, but I plan to add some weathering powders very soon. I just ran out of time last night.

Check out the Wild West Exodus Kickstarter here!

And with a little break in the construction of my Mechanicum... well... errr... constucts, I've been able to finish the painting on my large quad autocannon servitor. I've broken up the large areas of red a little with some chipping damage and some weathering powder (Clay Brown from Secret Weapon Miniatures).

Here he is from a variety of angles : )

The other models on my painting table now are these two Magos models. For me these two typify the variation found amongst the upper echelons of the Mechanicum. They certainly break the idea that the devotees of the Omnissiah all look the same.

Off to Cold Wars in Lancaster, PA, this weekend, so not much time for painting, but thankfully I get to look at toy soldiers all day ; )

Another Mechanicum Adept/Magos is completed!

This guy was quite popular when I posted the construction photo of him. I hope he hasn't lost any of his charm now that he's painted. I finally remembered to throw a little patina onto the brass sections of the model (using the Secret Weapon Miniatures' Storm Cloud Wash).

These models continue to roll out at a reasonably slow pace, but once my ACW painting is out of the way I hope to ramp up production : )

The Morbid Homunculus, by Nightmare, groundskeeper of the Gardens of Hecate

Over the last few months I've stumbled across a few dark corners of the blogosphere that are full of wondrous treasures, exciting works from minds twisted in some way (a good way), crazy things that more folks should see. So, I think when I have a spare moment here and there, I'll link to them from a Spotlight post, this one being the first.

I urge you to strap on your Blanchitsu goggles and take a stroll through the Gardens of Hecate, still in their springtime, but already ripe with wonderful fruit, and the promise of more to come.

I have a few more Spotlights planned, so keep your eyes peeled.

What you can do with a little putty...

Originally he was the Daemonic Herald of Nurgle from Forgeworld.

Now, with a little putty work and a paintjob, he's a Mechanicum Magos.

Not much to say that hasn't already been said about the work on my others Magos/Adepts, except to say thanks to Eye Of Error for his quickfire tutorial on painting liquid in vials, found here.

As a reminder, here he is in his pre-paint stage.

And here's a shot to entice you over to our Guns Of April blog. This year's project is just a month away from hitting the table at Adepticon. Hopefully everyone will be ready!

And now I can start showing them all together!

I am very happy! On Wednesday the first part of my base order from Dragon Forge Design arrrived. I was so excited, in fact, that all my other paint jobs were pushed to the side so I could get a chunk of the bases painted up and finally see my recent Mechanicum stuff added to them : )  In all I'll be getting over 100 bases from this very cool range - the Tech Deck series, found here!

As you can see on the two samples above, I've gone for a fairly dark scheme, in keeping with the brooding feeling of the rest of the models. Lots of steel (in various stages of decay), some exposed brass trim (with verde gris), some green cabling, and the ubiquitous hazard striping.

On some bases I've painted some of the cabling with hazard striping too, just for that extra pop of detailing. The rusty/dusty look on the bases is from a final dusting of Rust Red and Rust Orange weathering powders from Secret Weapon Miniatures.

Here's my current WIP for the Mechanicum, and the base he'll end up on.

And finally, I'll leave you with a clearer shot of the rebased (or freshly based) models so far.

I hope you like them : )

Dave

The wonderful work of Christina Piras!

Another blog to shine the spotlight on! Recently I found my way to Violet Paint, the blog of Christina Piras, an Italian painter. Christina's work is very crisp and clean - something I've always strived for with my painting - and her more recent works have some pretty cool colors modulations - something I've been messing around with at times.

Most of Christina's blog is a repository of her finished work, and as such it makes a great "reference library" to draw inspiration from. I heartily urge you to check it out.

Oh My... Shiny!

Apologies for the crappy photo, taken on my phone late last night.

There are sometimes I know I just shouldn't go to my FLGS (Dropzone Games), as I'll see something there I might not be able to resist. I find I'm more likely to be distracted if I have a LOT on my painting plate already (currently ACW, Mechanicum, Lamenters, and a couple of other things), so here's the new, shiny thing I've purchased.

Photo from Dakka member Valtyr, used without permission.

I picked up the Relic Hunters box, and have added a Guild Riflemen box that the nice folks at Wyrd sent me in January. After putting together these plastic models, I must say I'm very impressed. I'm not just impressed with the level of detail and the number of components that increases the layered feel of the models, but I'm also impressed by the amount of character pushed into each sculpt. Bravo Wyrd, bravo!

Now don't worry, I won't be suddenly playing Malifaux, but this does give me a chance to scratch the itch to paint these lovely figs. Once I'm done I'll be selling them off, that's my justification for buying them in the first place ; )

Cheers
Dave

Worth the wait?

With all the other fun stuff going on (like finishing off over 170 Union soldiers!), it has been a little tough to get some of my recent Mechanicum constructs painted. Finally, though, I was able to finish this chap. I hope he was worth the wait.

Originally I was thinking his ride was based on some sort of spider body, but now that it's all painted up, I think it more closely resembles some sort of nasty silverfish, or another creepy-crawly that likes to nibble away to the clothes at the back of your closet.

After a lot of modeling and painting, our 2013 Guns Of April project is finally nearing completion!

Personally I've converted and painted around 175 models, as has Rob Chandler (whose Confederates you see below). This is a lot of models, and I'm glad to be done.

Here's a quick taster of some of them. Sometime in the next few weeks we'll get a lot more photos up on the Guns Of April blog : )

The 7th Wisconsin in firing line

The 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry, dismounted

The 14th Tennessee, who lost over 90% of their men at the Battle of Gettysburg

Brigadier General James J. Archer, born just up the road from me in Havre De Grace, Maryland.
Studied at Princeton, and also Bacon College in Kentucky. Who knew there was a Bacon College?

Starting on the Relic Hunters

In between other projects (and boy, aren't there too many of them) I decided to start blocking out my colors on the Malifaux Relic Hunters I was tempted to purchase last month. Usually I'd have a clear idea of scheme for all the models and then I'd work on them in batches, starting with the darkest colors and layering up.

Most of the scheme has been decided for me (I'm sticking pretty close to the Wyrd "Studio scheme" for this group), so I'm going to have some fun with it by starting with mid-tones, highlighting up, then pushing in some other colors for shades. Fingers crossed it'll work alright.

I couldn't help myself and just had to start highlighting and shading the coat of this Guild Rifleman. Such beautiful models : ) I also enjoyed the detail on the gaiters.

And here's my tester for the bases. I think the freshly laid wood is going to work well against the black, blue, grey, and white scheme.

Well, my friend at Secret Weapon Miniatures continues to surprise and delight! If you haven't seen their Tablescapes Kickstarter yet, then head on over now. I'll wait until you get back : )

Misterjustin and the crew at Secret Weapon put out a load of great, top-quality products, and this one promises to be no different.

I've pledged for the 4'x8' set, and was only seconds off getting the early bird deal. That'll teach me to pledge to a project before an hour has elapsed.

"Crowdfunding" is a very interesting thing, and I had told myself that I wouldn't pledge to anther one before anything arrived from the other three I have pledged to arrived. One of them will hopefully be on time (Dream-Forge wave three next month), one is slightly delayed (Free Mars) and one has seen considerable delays, but is now hopefully arriving in a month or so (Massive Voodoo artbook).

This opportunity though, to help out a friend and perhaps get some more gaming in, was too good to resist, and now I'm hoping the Trenchworks board funds....

Brigadier General Solomon Meredith, commander of the Iron Brigade, with their color bearer.

As Blogger's wonderful automated process publishes this update, I'll hopefully be asleep on a plane from Baltimore to Chicago, getting in some last minute zzzzzzzs before the hustle and bustle that will be Adepticon 2013.

This year, as in previous years, I'll be on site to cover the event (well, the historical gaming aspects of the event) for Wargames Illustrated. In addition to the Flames Of War Nationals (Early War), and other Flames Of War tournaments, there are bound to be quite a few folks pushing around historical toy soldiers. Included amongst the latter group are our little band of hobbyists, The Guns Of April.

Friday night we'll be playing our "What if?" 1st day of Gettysburg. I'm not sure where in the venue we'll be, but if you are at the show drop by and say "Hi". We'll be playing from around 7pm til late, after which I'll be taking some more photos for our WI article to appear later in the year.

The miniatures are from the Perry twins, and the flag is from GMB Designs.

Something to pass the time...

A little while ago I posted this teaser. I wasn't 100% sure that i'd get around to showing him off to you all, but with my studio lights in Chicago (not due back for another 10 days) I figured you might like to see more.

Here's a composite shot of the early stages of the model. I've used a "dolly" from Reaper Miniatures as the skeleton (and a bunch of the flesh) beneath the clothing and equipment for a mini I'm currently (and enigmatically) calling "Bridge Guard". As you can probably guess, I started at the feet and I've built up and out from there.

Here he is at the last photographed stage. He does have a very Vostroyan feel to him, but he's not really Vostroyan. I've also sculpted a pair of hands for him, so once cast up, he and his clones will be able to hold swords, fusils, axes, standards (and the list could go on).

It has certainly been quite interesting doing this, my first fully-sculpted figure. Hopefully in the next year I'll be able to sculpt a couple more ; )

Back from Adepticon, setting priorities...

$

Well, it has taken a little while, but I'm finally caught up on things after arriving home from Adepticon on Monday. Sleep was, of course, the big one, and I'm pleased to say that crashing out on the couch each night after the girls were in bed has been very nice. Adepticon is a long show, with long hours and terrible pillows, so sleep isn't always the best. The greatest thing that I find that helps me power through such a great event is the interaction with my fellow painters, gamers, vendors, and enthusiasts of all stripes. Conversations about all manner of toy soldier related excitement can only be a good thing, right?

I spent four days taking photos of various types of historical gaming action, covering: Flames Of War, Black Powder, Bolt Action, Hail Caesar, Warhammer Ancient Battles, and SAGA. Over 220 photos that will end up illustrating at least four (possibly more) articles for Wargames Illustrated! Very pleased with that result.

I also had four entries for the Crystal Brush painting comp. Originally I was reluctant to enter, but decided to take a shot at the last moment (ie: I found myself splashing blood on the bases of my Lamenters at 11:00pm Wednesday night before leaving on Thursday). I entered my Lamenters Sergeant on Sci-fi Single, my Mechanicum in Squad, my Dreadnought in Vehicle (shown above in one of the CB official photos), and my Bridge Guard in Sculpting. Sadly none of them took away a trophy, but it was heartening to see a significant increase in the number of entries this year (200, over 125ish last year). Congratulations to all of those who took a trophy : )

We also ran our second Guns Of April game, our First Day of Gettysburg "what if?" scenario. I've just written up a report of the game for our GOA blog, you can check it out here. It was a lot of work, and not without its issues, but we all had a great time and are already looking forward to next year : )

I also took two seminars. The first was by an old friend from Australia, Victoria Lamb, the owner of Victoria Miniatures and the primogenitor of Object Source Lighting (so that's the class I took). The second was by Roman Lappat (aka Jarhead) from Germany, co-author of the wildly successful mini blog Massive Voodoo. I've been enjoying the MV crew's work for years, s I couldn't pass up a chance to sit in on his theory class. So many wonderful things were covered in the class, I just hope one day that I'll take the time to apply all the lessons learned to a competition entry.

On my way home I started sketching out a diorama I have been wanting to do since Games Day last year. Thankfully I hadn't already started because the things I learned in both classes have meant that I'm going to have to put A LOT more time into it all. Here you see the genesis of the piece. Perhaps I'll have it ready for Adepticon next year?

It should be a lot of fun to work on.

So, priorities then? Over the next two months I'm going to be working on:

• My Mechanicum army - my 2013 entry for Armies On Parade
• A FOW army commission
• The Malifaux Relic Hunters crew

Then for July I'm going to work on:
• a couple of Golden Demon entries
• possibly a Tau commission

And in August I'm going to work on:
• a Primarch for a friend of mine attending the Horus Heresy Gaming Weekend in Warhammer World.

Stay tuned for the progress ; )

Cheers
Dave
